Frequently Asked Questions
What LMS formats can I export from CourseCode Desktop?
CourseCode Desktop exports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, cmi5, and LTI packages. You can also deploy to CourseCode Cloud and download any format on demand without rebuilding.
Is CourseCode Desktop free to use for course authoring?
Yes. CourseCode Desktop is a free, open-source desktop application for building e-learning courses. CourseCode Cloud is optional for hosted delivery, analytics, and team workflows.
Can I build SCORM courses without the command line?
Yes. Desktop provides a visual workflow for creating, previewing, exporting, and deploying courses. Start with the SCORM course builder page if your goal is LMS upload.
Does CourseCode Desktop work with my LMS?
CourseCode Desktop exports standard SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, cmi5, and LTI packages that work with any compliant LMS — including Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Cornerstone, SAP SuccessFactors, Docebo, TalentLMS, and more.
Do I need CourseCode Cloud to use Desktop?
No. Desktop is local-first and works without a cloud account. You can author, preview, build, and export SCORM/cmi5 courses entirely offline. Cloud adds hosted deployment, analytics, and team collaboration.
What can AI do in Desktop?
Desktop includes an AI chat workspace that works with your local course files. Use it to draft slides, revise text, add interactions, and turn reference materials into course content. You can use your own API key or CourseCode Cloud credits.
What is cmi5 and why would I use it instead of SCORM?
cmi5 is the modern e-learning standard built on xAPI. It offers richer analytics, flexible launching, better mobile support, and no suspend-data size limits. Use cmi5 if your LMS supports it. CourseCode Desktop supports both — you can switch formats without changing your course.
Why does macOS or Windows warn about the installer?
CourseCode Desktop is currently in beta and the installers are not code signed or notarized yet, so OS security warnings are expected. Install only from coursecodedesktop.com or the official GitHub Releases and verify SHA256 checksums.
